Traumatic brain injury can arise from a variety of circumstances. Injuries sustained during car accidents are a leading cause, but it’s also possible to be injured by a car as a pedestrian or while riding a bike or motorcycle. Motor vehicle accidents involving a semi or eighteen-wheeler truck can also be particularly devastating, often resulting in traumatic injuries for drivers and passengers in smaller vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) lists a startling statistic: in 2011, pedestrians were among the victims of auto accidents whose numbers increased, with a total of over 4400 deaths that year. That was up from almost 4300 deaths in 2010, which itself was a 4% increase of the number of deaths reported in 2009. These are very troubling numbers; motorists should be very aware of those who are not in vehicles, as they stand to be injured much more greatly in an auto accident.

The NHTSA also lists statistics on bicycle fatalities as well:  pedal bike cyclists accounted for 2% of all traffic fatalities in 2011, with 677 deaths reported. This number also rose from the previous year as well: cyclists accounted for less than 2% of traffic fatalities in 2010.

Motorists should be concentrating on every potential danger while on the road, but special consideration should be given to those on foot. Every auto accident is dangerous, of course, but those who are in cars at the time have the protections of seat-belts, airbags, and the car itself; pedestrians and cyclists have no such protection.
