More than 4,500 former NFL athletes, suffering from brain injuries, sued the league claiming they concealed the dangers of concussions from the players.  Today, in a “Historic” agreement, the NFL reached a $765 million dollar settlement over concussion-related brain injuries among its 18,000 retired players.

Many retired NFL players now suffer from severe dementia, depression, and Alzheimer’s which they blame on the continuous blows to the head. The retirees claimed the NFL exploited, and profited from, such activities that “make for spectacular highlight-reel footage.”

The agreement lists the following:

  • “The settlement will include all players who have retired as of the date on which the Court grants preliminary approval to the settlement agreement, their authorized representatives, or family members (in the case of a former player who is deceased).”
  • “The settlement does not represent, and cannot be considered, an admission by the NFL of liability, or an admission that plaintiffs’ injuries were caused by football.”
  • $75 million will cover the cost of baseline medical exams
  • “A separate fund of $675 million to compensate former players who have suffered cognitive injury or their families;”
  • $10 million will be spent on a research and education fund

It is likely that this settlement means the NFL won’t have to disclose any internal documents on the league’s Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Committee which was led by a rheumatologist for over a decade.
